Retirement doesn’t look like it used to.
There’s no question that the medical profession is changing fast. And one of the biggest changes is when - and how - people decide to retire from or adjust their work. While the stereotypes in the past might have been all golf courses and Arnold Palmers, that reality is changing. In a recent survey by the Physicians Foundation, almost half of physicians- 46.8 percent - say they plan to retire sooner than planned (survey of more than 17,000 U.S. physicians).
Why are physicians leaving earlier?
Most of the physicians surveyed - about 80% - said they were at capacity. More than 60% said they were deeply concerned about the future of healthcare, and nearly half (48%) said they felt burned out almost all the time.
These pressures, combined with the more attractive options available in other settings, are spurring more physicians to consider leaving the profession earlier than planned. But what makes other options attractive? Here are a few key factors:
1) A supportive team environment
Working in a high-pressure environment can be exhilarating, but it can also be exhausting. One thing many physicians (not just those seeking to retire!) are longing for is a supportive, team-based environment that actually cares about each person. In investigating potential career paths, ask yourself, “Does this organization care about me, or do they just see me as a cog in the machine?”
2) A flexible schedule
Weekends? What are those?
Many physicians are looking for a schedule that allows them flexibility in their lives to be with family, to pursue other interests, or just to enjoy some well-earned relaxation!
Look for jobs that won’t require you to be on call or to staff overnight or emergency call-outs, that offer part-time or flexible hours, and that will allow you to live the life you’d like!
3) A focus on learning and growing
As we age, one of the most beneficial things we can do for our own health and longevity is to keep learning. An active mind is a huge component for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. If you’re considering a new career option, look for an option that allows you to learn and grow. If you’re going through the same motions over and over, it might be a lower-pressure environment, but you’ll quickly grow stagnant and frustrated. Expanding your knowledge and seeking out new challenges at your own pace is a core part of a satisfying and sustainable path.
