REAL PEOPLE, REAL CARE

Healthcare: it’s complicated. But it’s also deeply human.

Between debates over policy, best practices, advances in science, and ever-changing technology, sometimes the world of healthcare can feel like a very confusing one.

But one thing isn’t confusing at all: the human connection that lies at the heart of healing. At the end of the day, great care is about real people connecting to real patients, providing the best care they possibly can.

Real people providing real care

At Skilled Wound Care, that’s one of our core principles. We believe that reclaiming the humanity of everyone in the healthcare process - from patients to providers to family - creates better outcomes. And we believe that when we reconnect to what we have in common, we build better partnerships.

Whether we’re thinking about how to better connect with a patient, how to build a better working relationship with our colleagues, or how to deal with a challenging situation, coming back to what we all have in common keeps us grounded.

Healthcare - and human relationships - can be messy. But remembering that the person next to us is just as complicated, feels just as deeply, and is just as invested in their own experience as we are in ours can help us reach out a little better, and connect a little more.

How to do this? Paradoxically, sometimes the best way to truly connect is to think of ourselves: to remember that we have our own very special combination of idiosyncrasies, faults, strengths, flaws, and eccentricities.

The great William Osler, Canadian physician and one of the founders of Johns Hopkins - often hailed as a pillar of modern medicine - had an especially apt recommendation.

“Keep a looking glass in your own heart, and the more carefully you scan your own frailties, the more tender you are for those of your fellow creatures.”

In a time when so much of our time is preoccupied with countless tasks, and with electronic assistants and distractions, it’s worth taking a moment to remember our own humanity, and to reconnect with the people we encounter every day.

Real people, providing real care. It’s what really matters.

Skilled Wound Care is a mobile surgical practice committed to transforming the chronic wound care model in nursing facilities. Wound care experts make weekly bedside visits to patients in long-term care facilities, avoiding transfers to hospitals or clinics. Our expert physicians give patients the most up-to-date and effective wound treatments, and educate facility staff on how to help patients continue to heal quickly and effectively between visits. This model of collaborative care allows SWC’s physicians to improve patients’ lives and health outcomes, to empower nursing staff, and to raise public awareness. Skilled Wound Care, along with its nurse and nursing home partners, is working every day to positively transform traditional nursing home wound care.
