Skilled Wound Care raises $12K+ for Hurricane Harvey Relief - here’s how you can help!

This fall has been a challenging one: from devastating hurricanes slamming into the Caribbean and Gulf Coast states, to the shooting in Las Vegas, to the earthquake in Mexico City, sometimes it feels like every week brings a new, terrible disaster.

It can leave us feeling hopeless, which is why Skilled Wound Care decided to step up and do something: after collecting donations from colleagues and affiliates, the company provided a 1:1 match, resulting in $12,255 for Hurricane Harvey Relief. Donations went directly (in full) to the American Red Cross.

How can you help? As the website CharityNavigator points out, the most powerful way to assist is by giving money to those organizations that are already prepared and mobilized to help people on the ground:

“Following a disaster, it’s easy to see pictures or footage from the affected areas and want to give clothing and blankets to keep people clean and warm or food to feed the hungry. But, in reality, money is the most effective gift. Money allows the charities working on the ground to purchase the supplies they need to address the ever-changing needs of those affected.

Making a gift in the short-term is important for addressing immediate needs like food, clothing, shelter and medical relief. Many organizations see a drastic influx of resources in the aftermath of a disaster that begins to taper off in a few weeks. However, recovery efforts after a disaster can take many months and, in most cases, years...Check in with the organization you choose to support in a few months to find out how their needs have changed and how you can continue to support them.”

If you’re looking for ways to help, here are some helpful options to consider:

Support the efforts of the American Red Cross: Join Skilled Wound Care and our whole team by donating to the relief efforts of the American REd Cross. Visit their website, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund (which helps victims of hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and other natural disasters).

Give the gift of health with Americares.org: Americares is an organization saving lives and providing healthcare to people affected by disaster. They are airlifting supplies to Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria (more than $3 million dollars’ worth as of late September, and more since), and are working to mobilize resources, support local healthcare efforts, centers, and facilities, and provide help in areas of Florida and Texas affected by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.

As a company, we know that we are stronger, safer, and better when we stand together. So to our friends and colleagues in areas affected by tragedy - we are with you, in the immediate aftermath and in the slow rebuilding and recovery to come.

Skilled Wound Care is a mobile surgical practice committed to transforming the chronic wound care model in nursing facilities. Wound care experts make weekly bedside visits to patients in long-term care facilities, avoiding transfers to hospitals or clinics. Our expert physicians give patients the most up-to-date and effective wound treatments, and educate facility staff on how to help patients continue to heal quickly and effectively between visits. This model of collaborative care allows SWC’s physicians to improve patients’ lives and health outcomes, to empower nursing staff, and to raise public awareness. Skilled Wound Care, along with its nurse and nursing home partners, is working every day to positively transform traditional nursing home wound care.
