Do I need to be board certified or have completed a surgical residency?

No. You do not need to be board certified, and a completed surgical residency is not required. Many of our physicians come from outside the surgical specialties. We look for sound clinical judgment, a valid medical license and DEA, and a willingness to learn wound care techniques through our structured training program.

What are the typical work hours?

Hours typically run from 7 AM to 3 PM, occasionally extending to 5 PM at the latest. Schedules are Monday through Friday, with no nights, no call, and no weekends.

How does compensation work?

Compensation is fee for service, typically ranging from $750 to $1,500 per day depending on volume and patient complexity. Full time physicians average approximately $300,000 per year, with top earners exceeding $450,000. We also offer a quarterly bonus tied to patient healing and outcomes. Physicians can choose either W2 employment or 1099 independent contractor status. New physicians typically start at one or two days per week and ramp up to full time, generally a 4 day workweek.

How long is the credentialing process?

Short. Because skilled nursing facilities do not require the lengthy hospital credentialing process, most physicians can begin seeing patients almost immediately after joining.

Is malpractice insurance included, and does it include tail coverage?

Yes. Skilled Wound Care provides full malpractice coverage including tail insurance, and we stand behind our physicians directly if any issues arise.

How many patients will I see per day, and at how many facilities?

On average, our physicians see about 30 patients per day across 2 to 3 skilled nursing facilities. Some of our busier physicians see up to 60 patients per day depending on schedule and demand.

What types of procedures will I perform?

Surgical debridements when medically necessary, and skin substitute grafting when clinically indicated. All procedures are performed at the bedside. No operating room is required and there is no fight for OR time.

What patient population will I be treating?

Primarily elderly patients in skilled nursing facilities, an underserved population, alongside experienced nursing teams. Roughly half of cases are diabetic, venous, or arterial ulcers. The other half are pressure ulcers or pressure injuries.

You'll round at 2 to 3 facilities per day within your assigned territory. Some physicians drive beyond an hour from home, so comfort with regional driving is important.

Most facilities offer designated physician parking. Some of your facilities will be close to home, others farther away, so there is real windshield time involved in this job. Many surgeons find this a favorable tradeoff. Instead of waiting between cases or being held to a fixed OR schedule, you drive between rounding sites during normal daytime hours. No facilities are visited in the evenings or on weekends.

How much afterhours documentation is required?

Very little. Treasure, our proprietary EMR, is purpose built for wound care rounding. Once proficient, physicians complete their notes during rounds, virtually eliminating after hours documentation.

Wound care documentation is detailed and clinically demanding. Each wound visit requires a specific set of elements to be captured accurately. Our proprietary EMR, Treasure, is purpose built to streamline this work, so the required documentation gets done efficiently. Once you are proficient, most notes are completed during rounds rather than at home in the evenings.

What are the challenges for new physicians entering wound care in the nursing home?

The main adjustment is learning to work hand in hand with the nursing staff at each facility, since experienced wound care nurses bring real expertise to the bedside. Building consistent working relationships with the same nursing teams at the same facilities, rather than starting over with new ones, makes a meaningful difference in efficiency, communication, and clinical outcomes. Most physicians come to find this collaborative dynamic one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.

Is there a ramp up period?

Yes. In most cases, new physicians start with a smaller workload, typically one or two days per week, and gradually build up to full time as they get acclimated. This is an honest tradeoff. During ramp up, some physicians supplement their income with other work. To help bridge that period, Skilled Wound Care offers stipends to support physicians through the transition.

Yes. New hires complete structured shadow periods with experienced physicians, classroom training, and one on one mentorship before practicing independently.

Yes. We host two fully covered educational retreats per year (16 CME hours each) and run regular webinars on the latest clinical advancements in wound care.

Is there a fellowship program?
