Portrait of a Wound Care Provider

Skilled Wound Care wound care providers are a lot of things at once: educators, team leaders, healers, patient advocates, and wound care experts. But at the core of every great SWC provider are some common traits, one of which is the drive to always be better. We’ve canvassed the literature and come up with a list of what makes a truly great doctor (according to doctors, nurses, and patients).

Are you up for a quick self-assessment?

There’s no score, there’s no test: it’s a just a way to take a quiet moment and ask yourself, how are you doing? We can already guarantee that you work hard, are dedicated, and probably don’t get enough recognition for what you do. The fact that you want to continue to improve anyway speaks to your strength of character.

Ask yourself, how many of the following really describe you on a great day and also on a day when you’re tired and stressed and irritated?

On a regular basis, can I say that I respect people, healthy or ill, regardless of who they are?

Do I support patients and their loved ones when and where they need it?

Do I promote health as well as treat disease?

How courteous are my questions?

How good a listener am I? Do I let people talk, and truly listen to them carefully?

Is my advice unbiased?

Do I let patients actively participate in all decisions related to their health and health care?

Do I work cooperatively with other members of my healthcare team? Do I take their opinions and expertise into account?

Do I work to share my education in a way that empowers others rather than silences them?

Do I humbly accept that death is an important part of life, and talk openly, compassionately, and honestly about the realities of a situation that may end in death?

Do I take care of myself? Do I strive to have a balanced life and to spend time with my family and other loved ones?

Do I ask for help when I need it?

These are all values that we care about deeply at Skilled Wound Care. We believe that it’s not enough to just provide care; we have to challenge ourselves to provide better care every day, and we must strive to treat everyone we meet with the utmost respect, compassion, and love.

If that sounds like a team you’d like to join, we’d love to talk to you. Reach out to us here to find out more about becoming a Skilled Wound Care provider.

Skilled Wound Care is a mobile surgical practice committed to transforming the chronic wound care model in nursing facilities. Wound care experts make weekly bedside visits to patients in long-term care facilities, avoiding transfers to hospitals or clinics. Our expert physicians give patients the most up-to-date and effective wound treatments, and educate facility staff on how to help patients continue to heal quickly and effectively between visits. This model of collaborative care allows SWC’s physicians to improve patients’ lives and health outcomes, to empower nursing staff, and to raise public awareness. Skilled Wound Care, along with its nurse and nursing home partners, is working every day to positively transform traditional nursing home wound care.
